Averatec launches Voya 350 handheld NAV
Friday, 01 September 2006

Averatec, a company known best for churning out laptops (and UMPCs as of late) has triangulated a route into the portable navigation market. The Voya 350, its first attempt in the lucrative GPS arena, is a handheld-sized unit that packs all the standard features you'd expect in such a device, and unfortunately not a whole lot more. Powered by a 300MHz Samsung CPU, 64MB of RAM, and operating on Windows CE.net, the Voya 350 displays turn-by-turn guidance while utilizing the usual NAVTEQ maps shown on the 3.5-inch TFT touch-screen. While no built-in hard drive is included, you can store excess data using the SD / MMC slot. Semi-noteworthy features include the 4 hours of battery life you can rely on while trekking in the rough, and weighing just 6 ounces, it makes for an easy tag-along. Although countless similar units have been available for quite some time, it's not really as if one more unit is going to water down the GPS receiver market aymore, so if you're hunting around for a portable nav device that's a tad easier on the wallet than other offerings, the Voya 350 -- albeit under-featured -- looks like a solid value, and can be located now for around $400.

Unbreakable No-Battery Flashlight
Thursday, 31 August 2006

This practically indestructible flashlight has no batteries, and is always ready to light your way, no matter how long its been left unused. 30 seconds of gentle shaking produces five minutes of light from the shatter-proof LED that, in the darkest of conditions, will illuminate a 6' radius at 35'. When shaken back and forth, a high-field-strength magnet passes repeatedly through a wire coil, charging the flashlights capacitor for months. Unlike a battery, the capacitor can be recharged several hundred thousand times, wont corrode, and operates even in extreme hot or cold. LED withstands drops, bumps, and age limitations that finish regular bulbs. Impervious to water, the flashli ght floats for easy retrieval when dropped overboard or into a pool. 11 1/2" x 2" diam. (14 oz.)

Kingston launches Mini Fun flash drives
Thursday, 31 August 2006

We're not sure if Kingston is making a statement about the entertainment to be had from owning a USB flash drive (especially those pre-loaded with a couple of simple puzzle and adventure games), or if they really think "mini" and "fun" are both good qualifiers to brand a lineup of unusually shaped storage peripherals, but we can say with some certainty that their vaguely LEGO-like Mini Fun flash drives will run you between $15 and $33 for between 256MB and 1GB of storage. It's summer time, live a little, have some fun.
