The Samsung SCH-A990 takes gorgeous, high-res pictures outdoors in sunlight, plays music, shows mobile TV, and even makes pretty good phone calls. Unfortunately, its very slow autofocus and other quirks, such as the lack of file transfer options, mean it still can’t quite replace a good digital camera.
The Samsung SCH-A990 boasts a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and video-recording capabilities. The EV-DO handset also supports Verizon’s 3G services, has integrated Bluetooth, a swivel screen, a speakerphone, and good call quality.
The Samsung SCH-A990 is a multimedia mobile, and there are signs all over the phone to reflect its entertaining side. On the left spine, are rewind, play/pause, and fast-forward keys for the music player, a headset jack and a Micro SD card slot. We should note that you can’t plug the headset into the phone directly; rather it requires a separate adapter. Fortunately, that’s included, but it’s still an inconvenient step, in our opinion. Speakers are located on both sides of the phone.

This high-end mobile also has integrated Bluetooth, support for Verizon’s 3G services, and excellent call quality. But it’s not without problems. The phone was sometimes slow to perform multimedia functions in our tests and is marred by restrictions set forth by Verizon. Yet, for those who crave multimedia and the latest features on their phone, the SCH-A990 certainly fits the bill. Just be prepared for a little sticker shock. At $349.99, the SCH-A900 is on the pricey side, though certainly cheaper than the Nokia N80.

Released for Verizon Wireless, the Samsung SCH-A990 opens and twists to reveal a compact, yet professional-looking 3.2-megapixel digital camera. The SCH-A990 offers camera-happy customers the flexibility to either save their user-generated photos or videos using the phone’s internal memory or store them on a removable TransFlash memory card. The SCH-A990 offers excellent performance and a compelling feature set - including dual color LCDs, Bluetooth wireless technology, and EV-DO broadband technology.

The A990 struggles with low shutter speeds in low-light conditions. If you or your subject can’t stay still, expect blurriness, though you’ll get to keep good colors and relatively little noise. This could be solved by a good flash, but the A990 has a standard, weak camera-phone flash. And a bright but cloudy sky can cause purple halos and washed-out bright areas.
The 320-by-240, 15-frames-per-second videos you get in the A990’s camcorder mode are as good as you’ll get with any camera phone.
